FLORIDA KEYS – Although the official Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad centennial celebration ends Jan. 23, throughout the year and even beyond Keys visitors can explore sites, events, exhibits and landmarks related to the railroad that was lauded upon its completion as the world’s most unique.

Florida Keys Over-Sea RailroadFLORIDA KEYS — Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad ceased operating in 1935, but two Keys women vividly remember childhood experiences riding the “railroad that went to sea.”

Completed in 1912, it was called the Over-Sea Railroad because its track stretched more than 100 miles out into open water. For 23 years it carried passengers from mainland Florida to and through the Keys, affording them a breathtaking sense of steaming across the ocean.

Historic Re-enactment Brings Alive Keys Railroad Era for 100th Anniversary

100_1327BIG PINE KEY, Florida Keys — A special historic re-enactment commemorating the centennial anniversary of the completion of Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad is to be staged at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Bahia Honda State Park, mile marker 36.8, in the Lower Keys.

The re-enactment is to take park visitors on a trip through time from 1912, on the Over-Sea Railroad’s inaugural journey, through 1938 when the Florida Keys Overseas Highway replaced the track.
